The Kaizer Chiefs Reserve Team will begin their journey in the recently launched PSL’s Multichoice Diski Challenge when they play against Maritzburg United Reserves this Saturday. The inaugural PSL Reserve League will launch this weekend with a festival of matches taking place in KwaZulu-Natal and the Western Cape.

The competition will be divided into two phases, being the league phase and the knockout phase. The league will be divided into two streams of eight teams each. At stake will be a top four finish to qualify for the quarterfinals of the knockout phase.

A minimum of eight Under-23 players must be on the field of play at all times during a match.

We caught up with coach Ace Khuse as he prepared the Chiefs Reserve Team ahead of the weekend fixture against Maritzburg United. The fixture is scheduled to take place at the King Zwelithini Stadium on Saturday, 13 September 2014.

‘This is a good initiative,’ says Khuse. ‘ This Challenge will help in the development of the players. The younger players will be exposed to the professional approach involved in the game. There will be lots of logistics involved, which will make it easy to integrate development into the mainstream of professional soccer.’

Khuse recently represented the country as deputy to coach Serame Letsoaka during the eLAN Durban Under-19 International Football Tournament. The Tournament was held in partnership between the South African Football Association, KwaZulu-Natal provincial government and Ethekwini Municipality in August.

‘ I gained lots of experience from the tournament and also through working with Serame (Letsoaka). I will be bringing that experience in the Team,’ said Khuse.

‘We held our first training session under the auspices of the Diski Challenge preparation this week. The players have been active in their respective Development programmes. We will have some of the U-23 players from the senior team. I look forward to the Challenge, we have to also fulfil the mandate given by coach Baxter,’ adds Khuse.

Khuse recently guided the Chiefs reserves to third position, missing out by an inch to qualify for the knockout stages of the ABC Motsepe League.
