Kaizer Chiefs Reserves lost 1-0 to their arch-rivals Orlando Pirates Reserves in the MultiChoice Diski Challenge (MDC) festival played at Vosloorus Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
The match started at a fast and furious pace. The Chiefs defence, however, was caught napping and allowed Pirates to score barely two minutes into the game.
Thereafter, Amakhosi took the initiative and piled up the pressure, continuously raiding the goal area of Wayne Sandilands, who ended up as the Man of the Match after having to make numerous brilliant saves.
Itumeleng Shopane caused mayhem for Pirates on the right flank with his darting runs, while Sizwe Twala looked strong on the attack, even though missing a few golden opportunities to find the back of the net.
The score was 1-0 for the Buccaneers at the half-time break, while the start of the second half was delayed somewhat due to harsh whirlwinds.
Chiefs coach Arthur Zwane tried to change the outcome of the encounter in the second half by bringing on Yaseen Bunting for Twala (50’) and Reamohetse Lekoatsa for Lebohang Lesako (60’).
Pirates eventually got the three points, thanks to their opportunistic goal early on. It left coach Zwane disappointed, “I thought we could have won this match. If it had been a boxing encounter, we would have easily won on points. But this is football, you don’t score, you don’t win.
“It was one of those games – even if we played for another 90 minutes, we still wouldn’t have scored. It happens. We just have to move on and focus on our next MDC match.”
Chiefs’ line-up: Petersen (GK), Blom, Moleko, Rorwana, Ngcobo, Lesako (Letsoaka 60’), Mirwa, Moodley, Thibedi, Twala (Bunting 50), Shopane
Subs not used: Tshabalala (GK), Mokoena, Mbatha
