Kaizer Chiefs hung onto their Telkom Charity Cup after defeating Sundowns 1-0 at FNB Stadium on Saturday, courtesy of the golden boot of John "Shoes" Mosheou who broke the deadlock after a goalless first half.

The 37-year-old veteran, who proved beyond doubt in front of thousands of South African soccer fans on Saturday that he is still a force to be reckoned with, netted the all important goal in the 71st minute.

The disciplined, focused and composed utility player, brilliantly finished a Jabulani Mendu move past Sundowns' most experienced goalkeeper, Andre Arendse.

This after Moshoeu had missed a golden opportunity two minutes earlier.

His poor shot at close range was safely blocked by the legs of a fallen Arendse.

But the industrious player made up for that miss when he scored and the stadium erupted in response.

Mosheou can best be described a the "star player" of the event.

He also scored the second goal for Chiefs when they beat Dynamos 3-1 in the first semifinal earlier in the day.

Both goals were pure class.

Amakhosi, as the Glamour Boys from Phefeni in Soweto are affectionately known, won the same trophy after defeating Black Leopards 8-7 on penalties last year.

Chiefs took home a whopping R400 000 while the wounded Sundowns from Pretoria settled for R200 000.

It was their second silverware haul this year having reclaimed the Vodacom Challenge Cup in Durban last month.

Chiefs did not only enjoy the support of their traditional support base on Saturday, Orlando Pirates fans cheering on the Amakhosi as well.

The Buccaneers, who have always participated in the one-day event since its inception 19-years ago, failed to make it to the top four, finishing fifth after the votes were counted.

But Sundowns, who amassed 173 049 votes which saw them lead the pack, went down with their boots on.

They were the first to come close to breaking the deadlock when there was mass confusion in the Chiefs backyard in the 44th minute.

Chiefs goalkeeper Brian Baloyi failed to hang onto the ball but defender Patrick Mabedi cleared the danger before Sundowns were able to capitalise.

Dynamos and Leopards, the neighbours from Limpopo, each took home R100 000 for their participation.

It was reported that R1.7 million was raised in last year's event.
