Kaizer Chiefs finally claimed three points from Mamelodi Sundowns when they beat them in their own backyard through Ibe Zito Ogbonna’s 80th minute flying header. It was the Nigerian’s fourth goal of the season since putting the pen to paper mid November last year and it could not have come at a better time than against rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.

The last time Kaizer Chiefs beat Sundowns in a league game was the day after the Valentines Day in 2006.

The hard fought win was played in front of a packed Johannesburg Stadium and ensured that the Glamour Boys continued with their 39th birthday celebrations that kicked in on Wednesday, 07 January 2009.

The win pushed the Glamour Boys to the third position in the Absa Premiership log with 23 points after 15 games.

Mamelodi Sundowns started the game looking the sharper of the two sides and they created a few opportunities early in the game but somehow failed to convert them. The first real chance though fell to Josta Dladla who found himself with only Itumeleng Khune to beat following a superb through ball from the midfield but the young goalkeeper reacted well denying the Sundowns man. Sibusiso Zuma’s follow up shot went just wide after Chiefs failed to clear the ball.

Kaizer Chiefs coach, Muhsin Ertugral gave former U20 international, Wayne Matle his debut in Kaizer Chiefs colours and also included new signee, Abia Nale. The latter had a dream debut as he was a constant threat to the opposition defence with his dazzling touches. He was rewarded with a Man of the Match award for his efforts and received a standing ovation as he made way for Kaizer Motaung with five minutes remaining.

It was Mamelodi Sundowns who continued to pile pressure on Kaizer Chiefs with both Josta Dladla and Collins Mbesuma prominent but found hard to break the visitors defence marshalled by both Jonathan Quartey and Thabang Rooi.

With action swinging on both sides of the field new signee, Abia Nale found space to shoot on the left but his shot was saved by Calvin Marlin. Minute later, Collins Mbesuma brilliantly set up for Derrick Spencer but the latter’s shot went way over the bar.

Josta Dladla could have done much better when he received a wonderful pass from his teammate, Derrick Spencer inside the box but his shot went over the bar.

The Glamour Boys did come strongly towards the end of the first half but failed to penetrate Sundowns defensive wall.

Kaizer Chiefs started the second half with a bang with new signing, Abia Nale showing some deft touches but it was Sundowns who created the first opportunity when Sibusiso Zuma called Itumeleng Khune to duty. The veteran striker created a space to send a fierce shot outside the 18 yard area but it was brilliantly saved by Itumeng Khune who was the busier of the two goalkeepers.

Abia Nale who had a dream debut continued to mesmerise Sundowns defence and was at hand to set up for Ibe Zito Ogbonna whose header found the back of the net giving Marlin no chance. Minutes later, Man of the Match Abia Nale had his curler coming off the post.

This followed a quick counter attack involving himself and his teammate Ogbonna. Substitute, Kaizer Motaung Jr. making his first appearance this season after being sidelined by an injury came close to adding the second goal for Chiefs when his shot was saved by Calvin Marlin.

The Glamour Boys will travel to Durban this weekend with their heads held high to meet Thanda Royal Zulu who have been blowing hot and cold this season.
