Kaizer Chiefs heeded the call from the UN, to spend 67 minutes participating in community development in recognition of International Nelson Mandela Day, 18 July, a birthday of the world icon, humanitarian and former South African State President, Dr Nelson Mandela.

Amakhosi staff led by the Marketing Director, Jessica Motaung, spent over two hours cleaning in Phefeni, adjacent to the home of the Club's Executive Chairman Kaizer Motaung, where the Club was founded 43 years ago.

In the spirit of shared community value, the members of the community joined in to get rid of litter which augured very well in terms of 'Keeping Our Communities Clean', the message that the Club wanted to promote today.

"We chose Soweto for many reasons as part of doing our 67 minutes. It was about going home and doing something positive with the community. The exercise also gave us an opportunity to educate the community about the importance of taking care of the environment," said Motaung.

Jessica added that it was important to do the 67 minutes as Kaizer Chiefs staff, "It was nice to do something as a collective. We all had a great time in Phefeni and it was amazing how the community joined to be part of this noble cause. We also made a stop over at the Mandela House in Vilakazi Street, where we left a birthday message for Tata. It is such an honour to get an opportunity to celebrate Mandela's life. We will forever be grateful for the contribution he has made in creating a better life for all," added Motaung.

Meanwhile, Itumeleng Khune, the Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana Captain and Corporate Communications Manager Vina Maphosa, represented Amakhosi at the ANC and Ahmed Kathrada Foundation celebration of Madiba's 95th Birthday. The celebration took place outside the Medi Clinic, Pretoria Heart Hospital, where Madiba was admitted and recovering from a recurring lung infection. The event "was" attended by Ministers and other leading public figures, it included the signing of Mandela's 95th Birthday Day banner. Khune was given the honourable role of cutting the birthday cake.

"On behalf of Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana, I would like to wish Madiba a Happy 95th Birthday. It is an honour for me to represent my Club and the National Team and be part of this occasion. Madiba has done a lot for the Nation and let us continue to celebrate his legacy", Khune, addressing the crowd and media outside the hospital.
