Kaizer Chiefs' love affair with the Coca-Cola Cup ended in heartache as the Amakhosi crashed out of the competition they have won on three occasions since Coca-Cola renewed their sponsorship under the PSL in 2001. Cosmos now remain the only team to have beaten the Amakhosi in this competition as it was them who beat Chiefs in the final of the 2002 competition.

Sunday afternoon’s game began at a frantic pace with Chiefs doing most of the initial running but went down on thirteen minutes when a long ball from the Cosmos defence fell to striker Mamadou Diallo. Diallo sold Patrick Mabedi a dummy and than outsprinted the Amakhosi captain to strike past Emile Baron. Chiefs had an immediate chance for redemption a minute later but Gert Schalkwyk’s effort was cleared off the line by Cosmos defender Valery Nahayo.

Although a goal down Chiefs did continue to pile on the pressure in order to avoid going into the break a goal down, a Gert Schalkwyk miss kick on twenty minutes fell for Thabo Mooki whose fierce shot was saved by Phali in the Cosmos goal. On twenty three minutes Thabo Mooki again brought out the best in Phali with a well taken free kick which the Cosmos net minder acrobatically turned away.

For Chiefs the second half went much the same as the first with The Amakhosi doing all the running and being the more creative but could not turn these opportunities into goals, as first Louis Agyemang and Shoes Moshoeu exchanged short passes, but the veteran Moshoeu could not connect with the final ball.

Cosmos than struck again as Diallo beat David Obua and sent in a looping cross which was superbly met by the head of Chris Katongo who doubled the visitor’s advantage. Chiefs were now chasing the game and Cosmos were happy to sit back and absorb the pressure, Arthur Zwane continued to mesmerize Cosmos down the right and came close to putting his name on the score sheet on the half hour mark. All the thoughts of a Chiefs come back were thrown out of the window as David Obua elbowed Cosmos Nahayo and received his marching orders.

Down to men Chiefs continued to fight and once again found a number of players with decent goal scoring opportunities but could not find the net, Louis Agyemang was unfortunate as he headed across goal when he found himself on the goal line with the goal at his mercy.

When referee Daniel Bennett blew his final whistle the Chiefs players fell to the ground in despair, Chiefs will now turn their attention to retaining their PSL crown as they fell in bizarre circumstances at the second hurdle in the 2005 Coca Cola Cup.
