The debate has raged over the past couple of days since it became clear that Chiefs and their Gauteng rivals, Sundowns were in the final, as to where the game should be played. On Tuesday though the teams came to an agreement with the PSL and the sponsors that the match be played at the Vodacom Loftus Stadium in Tshwane.
Final in the capital
The Amakhosi did play a semifinal against Moroka Swallows during the 2004 Coca Cola Cup which they won on penalties at Loftus and this will be the first time in the history of the PSL that a Cup Final will be played at the Vodacom Loftus Stadium.
The match will kick off at 20h00 on Saturday 1st December with The Amakhosi being designated as the away team, which means that Sundowns will wear their home strip.
Last outing
The Telkom Cup Final will be Chiefs' first cup final played in Gauteng since they defeated Silver Stars on the 6th December 2003, a game which The Amakhosi won 2-0 at the FNB Stadium with Stanton Fredericks and Patrick Mayo finding the goals for Chiefs on the day.
Since then Chiefs have played in three more cup finals, namely the 2004 Coca Cola Cup Final, the 2006 ABSA Cup, the 2006 SAA Supa 8 Cup Final, all of which were played outside of Gauteng. Indeed, so was the last cup meeting between the teams, which was the 2005-06 ABSA Cup semifinal.
That game was contested at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg in the North West Province. After the teams were deadlocked with 120 minutes of game time played, penalties were needed to decide the outcome, and Chiefs prevailed, winning the shoot out 2-1 to proceed to the ABSA Cup Final which they duly won defeating Orlando Pirates, also on penalties in the Final.
