Kaizer Chiefs' thoughts will be on reaching the CAF Champions League group stages when they host Angolan side Primero De Agosto in the first leg of their CAF first round encounter on Wednesday evening. A good result against Primero in the first leg will go a long way towards boosting Chiefs for the second leg which will take place in Angola early in 2021.
With a place in the group stages up for grabs, Chiefs will be eager to get out of the starting blocks quickly as they play their 30th game in the African Champions league. Chiefs have only ever lost twice at home in the competition. Of their previous 29 games in the CAF Champions league since their first game in the preliminary round, Chiefs record in the competition reads: P29 W17 D2 L8. With a good record at home in the CAF Champions League, Chiefs will be looking to make this record work in their favour on Wednesday evening.
This will Chiefs’ first game in the African Champions League against an Angolan opposition, but they have faced Primero’s rivals Inter Clube De Luanda in the 2001 African Cup Winners Cup final, where Chiefs defeated them 2-1 on aggregate. The first leg ended 1-1 in Luanda while Chiefs won the second leg 1-0 to lift their first African Club title.
Primero have faced South African clubs before. The defeated Orlando Pirates in the 1997 group stages home and away 2-1. They also overcame Wits in the 2018 first round after winning the first leg 1-0 at home. They beat ‘The Students’ by the same score in Johannesburg to send the game to a penalty shootout where they prevailed 3-2 on penalties. Current Chiefs coach Gavin Hunt was the Wits coach during those games in March 2018, while Chiefs defender Reeve Frosler scored in the penalty shootout for Wits.
Chiefs overcame Cameroonian side PWD Bamenda 1-0 on aggregate in the preliminary round to reach this stage of the competition, winning the first leg 1-0 away in Limbe while the second leg ended 0-0. Primero received a bye to this stage, and this will be their first game in the 2020-21 CAF Champions League.
