Chiefs Telkom Cup game kick off delayed

The much-anticipated Telkom Knockout opening game which is to feature The Amakhosi against Johannesburg Rivals Bidvest Wits at the Johannesburg Stadium on Saturday afternoon, has seen the kick off time for the game delayed.

The game which was originally scheduled to start at 15h15 has been delayed by half an hour. The decision to delay the game was taken at a meeting held at the PSL offices in Johannesburg on Thursday morning.

Representatives from both clubs were at the meeting which was also attended by representatives of the PSL and the sponsors. It was unanimously agreed that due to the current heat wave being experienced on the highveld, it would be a wise move to postpone the game as playing the game in the searing Johannesburg afternoon heat would affect the players and spectators alike and would not allow for a good football spectacle.

Kaizer Chiefs would have preferd to play the game in the evening but were unable to have the game postponed to an evening kick off as Chiefs team manager Bobby Motaung explains: “We would have preferred to have played the game in the evening under much cooler conditions. Anyway for a number of reasons this was not possible and we are happier playing later in the afternoon than at 15h15”.

Instead the game will now kick off at 15h45 at the Johannesburg Stadium located in Doornfontein at the edge of the Johannesburg CBD this Saturday afternoon (28-10-06) as Chiefs aim for the R4.25 million cash prize which comes with winning this prestigious tournament.

The Amakhosi will be looking to further strengthen its stranglehold in Cup competitions, by dominating all comers in the Telkom Cup in the same way that they did in the Coca Cola Cup, the predecessor to the Telkom Cup.

In the five competitions of the Coca Cola Cup contested by PSL teams from 2001, Chiefs won the Cup on three occasions and were finalists on one more occasion. Over all Chiefs will be looking to add to their nine League Cup titles, which they have won since 1984 in the main Cup competition for 1st division NSL / PSL teams.
