It was a special day for defender Siphiwe Mkhonza, who faced his former side for the first time since joining Chiefs. Mkhonza scored an own goal and a goal against Chiefs in his last game for Arrows.
The first opportunity of the game fell to Chiefs striker Patrick Mayo. Midfielder John Moshoeu guided the ball through to him, but his resulting shot only found the side netting.
Chiefs looked the stronger side and controlled play throughout the first half. Arthur Zwane gave Chiefs the lead in the 14th minute when he picked the ball up after it glided through the back line. Zwane hit a low shot into the far corner that easily beat Davies Phiri.
Arrows had to only wait 10 minutes to draw level when Cyril Nzama headed the ball back across the goal, straight into the path of Lucky Sibeko who rifled home from close range.
Zambian striker Collins Mbesuma, back in the squad after pulling a disappearing act prior to the league match against Bush Bucks last week, came close to giving Chiefs the lead on 31 minutes. Moshoeu touched the ball back neatly into his path but Mbesuma’s shot went marginally wide of the post.
The second half started with Chiefs clearly not content with the score at one-a-piece. Mbesuma was quick to give Amakhosi the lead on 48 minutes when he received a great ball from man-of-the-match Zwane, he controlled well and hit a powerful shot which Phiri could only parry into his own net.
Arrows started to put a couple of passes together and Richard Henyekane, who is yet to score a professional goal, broke through the defence and got in numerous shots at goal but he couldn’t beat Fernandez, who played brilliantly.
Substitute striker Justice Sithole gave Chiefs some trouble when he broke down the left and cut inside with less than 10 minutes to go but Fernandez was able to cover his goal.
Both teams continued to apply pressure, but to no avail, as they battled to convert their chances. Zwane, Khanyeza both came close with shots but the score remained 2-1.
