Kaizer Chiefs (0) 2 (Tshabalala 87, Zwane 90)
Ajax Cape Town 0
Caution: Evans
Kaizer Chiefs managed to snatch their first three points of the season when two goals in the last five minutes, the first from Siphiwo Tshabalala and a thunderous shot from substitute Arthur Zwane. The latter might have been on the field for less than 40 seconds and scored with his first touch.
Ajax Cape Town created more chances but they were not about to deny the hosts to continue with their celebrations for Heritage Day with an inspirational 2-0 win.
The Glamour Boys started on a high note when Jose Torrealba, making his first start in the league came close with a shot inside ten minutes.
Then it was Ajax Cape Town who took over with Brett Evans forced a good save out of Itumeleng Khune. The Ajax leftback created a space for him to shoot from a tight angle but found Itumeleng Khune in an uncompromising mood as he parried the shot away.
The Ventersdorp born is at his best few minutes later when he went down well to deny former teammate Mabhudi Khenyeza.
The latter should have done better at the 38th minute when he was set up by Sameehg Doutie, with only a keeper to beat his shot hit the post.
At the beginning of the second stanza, Ajax Cape Town should have gone upfront when another ball from Mabudi Khenyeza hit the upright before Itumeleng Khune and Mokete Tsotetsi combined to thwart the danger.
Ajax Cape Town was once again denied by the post when Sameeng Doute’s short from close range came off the post with the keeper beaten.
With Ajax Cape Town defence difficult to break, Muhsin Ertugral brought on the young, George Lebese in the place of David Mathebula. The youngster was in the thick of things as he combined with Onismor Bhasera but the latter’s shot went just wide of Sean Roberts’s goals.
George Lebese missed a chance to score his first goal in the elite league when he rounded a defender put his tame shot was saved by Sean Roberts as Chiefs searched strongly for the elusive goal.
Chiefs who were attacking Ajax Cape Town non stop were finally rewarded at the 87th minute when Tshabalala scored a cracker just outside 18 area. This was after Ajax defender cleared Gert Schalkwyk straight to Tshabalala who was just outside 18 area.
Muhsin brought veteran winger, Arthur Zwane with less than a minute remaining and the Meadowlands born winger put the final nail in the Ajax coffin when he scored with a powerful shot outside the 18 area following a poor clearance from Ajax defence.
