Kaizer Chiefs will take on Soweto rivals Orlando Pirates in the inaugural Carling Black Label Cup match. This was revealed at the well attended launch at Monte Casino on Monday night.

The historic challenge will take place at FNB Stadium on July 30. For the first time in the history of football the fans will be picking the teams.

The fans will put a special pin code into their mobile phones, just as they would do if they were refilling their cellphones with airtime.

The pin code will be found under the caps of bottles of Carling Black Label. Fans can make just one selection at a time and will be given a choice of around 18 players from whom they will select their starting lineup.

The fans will also have an opportunity to vote by SMS for one substitute per team. For Chiefs player the SMS number is 31011. The other changes will be done by the Club coaches.

Prominent Kaizer Chiefs supporter Thulani Ngcobo, speaking to kaizerchiefs.com, welcomed the idea. “This is a great opportunity for us as fans. It is good to see that authorities in football respect our voice and our general contribution in football. I am really excited about the new concept and I am sure I speak for all the fans of the two Soweto giants.”

Head Coach Vladimir Vermezovic was also in attendance at the launch, together with Executive Chairman Kaizer Motaung, Football Manager Bobby Motaung, Managing Director Bheki Shongwe, Marketing Director Jessica Motaung and Brand Manager Dara Carroll. He joked that he will be in the ‘Presidential Suite on the day of the match’.

“It will be interesting to see how the supporters are going to respond to the idea. For supporters, football is entertainment but for me it is a job. Maybe I will be at the Presidential on the day,” he said with a smile.

The competition, that is going to run for the next five years, will start on June 1.
