Two goal in each half saw The Amakhosi through to a comfortable two nil victory over Wits at the Bidvest Stadium on Wednesday evening. It was Chiefs fourth win of the season and their second away victory of the campaign.

Shaun Bartlett got Chiefs off to the perfect start when he headed them into the lead with just twelve minutes of the match gone as he notched up goal number four for the season. David Obua scored a spectacular second for the Amakhosi with a vicious left foot drive in injury time.

The score line though is not reflective of just what a tough time the plucky Students, who started the match in third place on the standings, gave Chiefs, as they too had their fair amount of goal scoring opportunities. But for some resilient defending, Wits too could have found their way onto the scoreboard. In the end though Muhsin Ertugral will take a win in whatever form it may come. With a host of other results going in their favour in the PSL on Wednesday, Chiefs victory sees them move up into the top eight position on the standings.

Evans close on

The home team were making the most of their advantage and were using the compact surroundings of the Bidvest Stadium to their advantage early on. In the seventh minute a series of quick passes handed Wits the first strike at goal. Richard Rantjie collected a throw-in and quickly played a pass to Marwaan Bantam, who in turn picked out Dale Studzinski with another short pass. The lanky Wits striker held the ball up and teed it up for the onrushing Phil Evans, who struck the ball ferociously goal wards with his effort going inches above Khune’s goal.

Bartlett gets even

After being frustrated by Moeneeb Josephs when the teams met earlier in the season, Chiefs striker Bartlett got some payback as he opened the scoring when he headed The Amakhosi into the lead in the twelfth minute. Arthur Zwane got Chiefs going running up the left wing and laid the ball off to Onismor Bhasera, who made an overlapping run. Bhasera initially got tangled with Shendzelani. His dogged determination saw him fight for the ball. It was a battle which he won just outside the Wits 18 yard area and then sent a looping cross to the back post where Bartlett unmarked was able to run in and lunged forward to head the ball past Josephs.

End to End

The first half was characterised by both teams having ample scoring opportunities. Kaizer Junior turned Zwane's cross from the right just wide of Joseph’s goal in the 17th minute. Calvin Sosibo then went close after Evans chested the ball into his path, his first time effort went slightly the left of Khune’s goal. Then on 33 minutes a Wits throw-in from the left went unchecked into the Chiefs danger zone, Khune came out for the ball but by then Evans had already connected with it. However, the ball sailed past Khune but Jimmy Tau was standing behind him and blocked Evan’s effort with his chest before clearing the ball.

Bruin let off

Wits substitute Bruin Senokoane allowed to glorious goal scoring gift, which came his way eleven minutes apart in the second half, to go a begging - the first came in the 59th minute when he completely missed a cross from the left which came in courtesy of Lobo. With the goal at his mercy and invitingly open, Bruin was unable to make contact with the ball in front of an open net. His next miss on 70 minutes saw him side foot a Neil Winstanley cross from the centre of the park of Khune’s goal. Once again Bruin was in acres of space and could have taken his time to pick out his spot and hit the back of the net, but was unable to do so.

Extra special

With nine minutes to go Siphiwe Tshabalala cleared a ball off the line as Fabian McCarthy’s backward flick was not properly read by Khune. In the end Tshbalala got back ahead of Moyo and cleared the danger. Chiefs made certain of the points when David Obua scored their second goal in injury time at the end of the game. Picking up a pass some 20 yards out, Obua let rip and the ball curled and then straightened as it shot passed Josephs to rattle the back of the net and hand Chiefs all three points.
