Kaizer Chiefs registered their 13th win of the season on Wednesday night when they beat Absa Premiership strugglers, Mpumalanga Black Aces by 2-0 in an entertaining encounter played at Loftus Stadium.
Mandla Masango and captain, Jimmy Tau found the back of the net for the Glamour Boys in the 13th and 74th minute respectively. The win consolidated Amakhosi’s third position on the log with one game to go before the end of the Absa Premiership season 2009/2010.
The Glamour Boys were welcoming Mpumalanga Black Aces for the second time in seven days following the abandoned match last week due to a water-logged pitch. The Amakhosi were looking to start where they left off last week but it was Aces who got off to a brighter start when Hamilton Masondo forced Itumeleng Khune to make an early save as early as 2nd minute.
It was the hosts though who got to the score sheet first when Mandla Masango fired home from close range in the 13th minute after Aces defenders had failed to clear the initial danger inside 18-area box allowing Masango to grab his first goal since scoring on his debut back in July 2007.
Having come close to scoring couple of times this season the goal might go a long way in helping the player’s confidence with the coach, Vladimir Vermezovic singling him together with other younger players in the team as “the future of Kaizer Chiefs” following his performance after coming in as a second half substitute against Orlando Pirates on Saturday.
Punch Masenamela who has done well since coming in for injured Jimmy Jambo came close to adding the second one of the night when he managed to beat the goalkeeper, Oscar Ramogoadi but his strike from an awkward angle went just wide. This was following a superb pass from George Lebese, 1-0 to Chiefs at half time.
There was controversy though as referee, Buyile Gqubule blew his whistle for half time with George Lebese facing only goalkeeper, Ramogoadi.
In the 60th minute Black Aces appeared to have been given a life line when Buyile Gqubule returned to the spotlight this time awarding Aces a penalty after Thomas Sweswe was adjudged to have brought down Lordwick Maleka.
Itumeleng Khune who was named Man of the Match for his efforts seem to have returned to his best after saving the initial penalty from Hamilton Masondo but the referee ordered a retake. However, Masondo found Itumeleng Khune in an uncompromising mood as the Ventersdorp born pulled a double superb save denying Masondo from the spot kick and rebound.
On the other end, Mandla Masango came close grabbing his brace as he watched his well taken shot with his weaker left foot going just wide of Oscar Ramogoadi’s goals.
EL Capitan, Jimmy Tau put the game beyond doubt in the 74th minute when his powerful header beat Oscar Ramogoadi following another superb cross from enterprising youngster, George Lebese.
With Itumeleng Khune shining in the poles, Vladimir Vermezovic handed Kaizer Chiefs Development product, Lucky Khune a brother to Itumeleng his debut for the Amakhosi.
Amakhosi will play their last Absa Premiership game against Free State Stars on Saturday, 6 March 2010. Kick off is at 15h30.
