Kaizer Chiefs emerged victorious in the opening fixture of the MultiChoice Diski Challenge on Sunday, beating Jomo Cosmos 4-0.
“Goals are important,” coach Donald Khuse reflected about the excellent performance of Amakhosi’s reserve side. “Because you will never know what can happen at the end of the competition when the goal difference can determine your position on the log. We are ecstatic about the win and I am happy with the boys’ performance.”
Chiefs opened the score five minutes into the game with a well-taken goal from the enterprising Yusuf Bunting. The winger’s scintillating runs on the left flank deservedly earned him the 'Man of the Match' award.
The rain soaked pitch at Tembisa’s Makhulong Stadium made it difficult for Amakhosi’s normal passing game. Khotso Malope, however, made it look easy when he dribbled past the Cosmos midfield to score with a grass cutter in the 15th minute.
“We looked good on structure and discipline,” commented senior team coach Steve Komphela, who watched the proceedings from the stands.
Emmanuel Letlotlo came on to replace the limping Andisiwe Mtsila at the start of the second half. And what a substitution it was. A menacing Letlotlo produced a brace, scoring in the 54th and 89th minute.
Bookings were handed out for an assortment of infringements to Edward Manqele, Lorenzo Gordinho and Siboniseni Ngcobo.
Other substitutes were Luyanda Mdlalose, who came on for Bunting in the 72nd minute and Nkululeko Buthelezi, who replaced Itumeleng Shopane.
Chiefs' next fixture for the MultiChoice Diski Challenge is on Saturday, 12 September at Dobsonville Stadium (kick-off is at 12:00).
