Ninety minutes of exhilarating football failed to produce a winner with Chiefs giving a fine performance on the day.
Malawian international Patrick Mabedi and Daniel Matsau gave Chiefs the upper hand in the penalty shoot-out while Felix Yeboah and Stephen Oduro kept the Ghanaians on the back foot as they failed to convert.
Amakhosi then failed to convert their next two kicks with Jabu Pule missing and Arthur Zwane’s strike hitting the upright. Kotoko were suddenly on level terms as Joe Hendricks and captain Joe Sam easily beat Chiefs 'keeper Brian Baloyi.
The near-capacity crowd was treated to a feast of exciting football with Pule and Lucky Maselesele displaying some fine footwork. The Amakhosi attacked with rhythm and the defence was well-marshalled by man of the match Mabedi.
Baloyi returned from national duty to lead his side and did that with style as he made a couple of spectacular saves including two penalties during the shoot-out.
Chiefs lost their rhythm in the second half after the replacement of Patrick Mbuthu and Stanton Fredercks, who made way for Sbusiso Sithole and Daniel Matsau respectively.
The "healing process" – as the tournament was labelled – was momentarily forgotten as a number of Chiefs and Kototo players got involved in a punch-up towards the end of the match.
