Most recently known as the Coca Cola Cup the tournament will now be taken over sponsored by Telkom which is a highlight on the season’s schedule.
Speaking on Friday from the PSL headquarters, PSL CEO, Trevor Phillips reiterated the importance of such an event, saying that “this heralds the start of a transformation process”, which will include giving the PSL the spending power that it needs to improve infrastructure. He also said that this was a watershed moment for South African club football, as this season is pivotal for the development of the game for at least the next two decades.
The announcement of Telkom as the sponsor will see the prize money of no less than 2,5 million Rands, making it the richest tournament South African football has ever seen.
Telkom is already involved in football, staging the well-known Telkom Charity Cup annually. CEO of Telkom, Papi Molotsane, feels it is important to connect with the community, and football is a perfect platform. Especially if, as Molotsane states, “the appeal had grown to immense and unequivocal popularity- it is truly a love affair.”
Kaizer Chiefs have a long and proud history with the Cup, even during its many facelifts. While it was the John Player Special Knockout Cup, Chiefs lifted the trophy four times. As the Rothman’s Knockout Cup, the Amakhosi won the tournament twice, both times against rivals Mamelodi Sundowns.
It would take the second instalment of Coca-Cola sponsoring the event for Chiefs to win, and then they did it in style, winning it 3 times. All in all, This makes the Amakhosi the out and out champions when it comes to the Knockout Cup, in whichever form it may be, being crowned Champions an amazing 9 times.
This is jaw dropping when one considers that the only mentionable teams after this masterful performance are Jomo Cosmos, Mamelodi Sundowns, Wits University and Umtata Bush Bucks, each taking the cup home a mere 2 times.
The Knockout Cup final is scheduled for 16 December of this year, but it will be a ferocious battle to be the remaining two clubs in the final. Interestingly enough, the last time Chiefs won the Cup was in 2004, when they beat SuperSport United.
The Amakhosi will surely use this as a psychological advantage point when they face SuperSport on Sunday, 27 August at Loftus Versfeld.
The official launch for the Telkom Cup will take place on the 9th October where the league and the sponsors will make further details relating to the tournament public.
