It was not work as usual at the Kaizer Chiefs training grounds on Friday morning, the 6th Decem2013. The players and the Technical Team were still reeling in shock at the news of the passing on of the global icon. Dr Nelson Mandela died on Thursday night (5 December 2013).

Stuart Baxter </strong~ “Madiba was important to the world and he taught us the importance of forgiveness and humility.”

Siphiwe Tshabalala ~ “We are who we are today because he paved the way for us.”

Doctor Khumalo ~ “I will not forget the words he uttered before we played against Cameroon; “We must remember that we are wearing South African caps not our individual caps. Through sports this is how we are going to unite the country and through his inspiration we went on to lift the 2006 Afcon."

Bernard Parker ~ “We have lost an icon, a true gentleman and a great man. He touched a lot of lives. He had dreams and some were realised. We must pursue his dreams and all other dreams that were not achieved during his time.”

Pa Gaxa ~ “This is a big loss. He brought peace not only in South Africa but in many other countries. He sacrificed his life not for himself but for everyone.”

Itumeleng Khune ~ “It is a sad Friday. For us here at work it has been difficult. You can see by the response how Madiba impacted lives all over the world. For us in sports, he was an additional player. We have lost a legend and a father. He once shared a joke with me when I met him for the first time. He said to me "I see the future captain in you" and here I am today. He taught me respect and humility.”

May your soul rest in peace Madiba.
