“We are results driven,” coach Steve Komphela reacts after last night’s 2-0 triumph over Golden Arrows. “The win will give us a boost for our home fixture against Maritzburg United on Saturday.”
Chiefs beat Arrows 2-0 courtesy of Camaldine Abraw’s headed opener and substitute William Twala’s goal, which sealed it at the death.
“There are matches where we drew unnecessarily,” laments Komphela. “However, these are three points gained and it is good to build from here.”
“But we have to deal with the tendency to put the foot off the paddle when we are in the lead,” Komphela reflected on Arrows being allowed to dominate the second half. “On the other hand, the team must be complimented for scoring early in the game as well as in the last minute, because those are critical phases of the match.”
“We have been there two seasons, having had a 12 points lead before giving it away,” the Amakhosi coach comments on Mamelodi Sundowns’ current ten-point lead on the Absa Premiership log table. “We will soon catch-up. We still have to go through the same programme as Sundowns, so it is game on. There are still more than enough points to play for.”
Chiefs’ Togolese striker Abraw netted his third league goal against Arrows (and his fifth in total). Komphela adds: “Camaldine is scoring and getting more confident with every game.”
The coach furthermore heaped praise on Man of the Match Willard Katsande: “He is a role model and he is scoring goals too, which is an added advantage for the team.”
Amakhosi will return home to host another KwaZulu-Natal-based outfit, Maritzburg United, at the FNB Stadium on Saturday, 6 February (kick-off is at 18:00).
Tickets for the Chiefs-Maritzburg match are sold for R40 at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets nationwide.
