Kaizer Chiefs will be looking to continue where they left off as they resume their league programme after the festive season break on Saturday. The Glamour Boys will do battle against SuperSport United in the first game of the year.
Amakhosi closed off the first half of the season on a high by collecting six points from the last two matches of the year against Platinum Stars and Ajax Cape Town respectively.
Steve Komphela’s boys will travel to the lowveld to take on SuperSport United at their alternative home ground, Mbombela stadium on Saturday at 18:00.
Team captain Itumeleng Khune says the team needs to hit the ground running in 2018 by winning their first match of the year convincingly. “We owe it to our supporters who have not been too happy over the last two seasons,” he adds. “Supporters in Nelspruit and surrounds always attend matches in great numbers whenever we are there. We expect them to come out again on Saturday in their Gold & Black colours.”
Khune has had a great start to the season, bagging five Man of the Match accolades to underline his value for to the Glamour Boys. “It’s as important to ensure that we do not concede easy goals, as it is to convert the chances we create,” says the skipper.
Chiefs currently lie third on the Absa Premiership log with 22 points from 15 games, while Matsatsantsa occupy 11th spot with 16 points from 11 games.
The goalkeeper was ever present during the first half of the season. He plans to continue working hard at training to maintain his position in the line-up.
“The second half of the season is tough but we are ready. The club has signed some talented players and we hope they will contribute towards the team winning silverware this season,” Khune adds.
“We are happy to be heading back to Mpumalanga province as we have not been there yet this season. We know that SuperSport United are formidable opponents but the lads have been working hard and we are confident that we give our supporters a reason to cheer.”
Chiefs play United in an Absa Premiership fixture at the Mbombela stadium in Nelspruit on Saturday, 06 January at 18:00.
Tickets are on sale at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers outlets nationwide at a cost of R50.
