Cosmos a special place in Khune’s heart
Cosmos a special place in Khune’s heart

A mere five and a half months ago Itumeleng Khune was just another young keeper trying to fight is way into the Chiefs first team, but one Saturday night in August last year his world was literally turned up side down when he made his debut for The Amakhosi in a league match against Cosmos.

In his debut match Khune pretty much held his own and was resilient against a strong Cosmos frontline that could only beat him from the penalty spot, as Chiefs and Ezenkosi eventually played out a 1-1 draw.

Given Chiefs and Cosmos current league standings, Sunday’s game will have added impetus for both teams who will want to emerge with three points, given the fact that Cosmos is the team against whom he made his debut, Khune he is looking to once again put in a sterling performance which can help Chiefs turn their fortunes around.

Special day

Khune explained to kaizerchiefs.com exactly what playing against Cosmos means to him, and said “I made my debut against them and that match was the day the window of opportunity was opened for me and I jumped through the gap and made it count in my favour. Looking back since that last Cosmos match playing Ezenkosi will always have a special and very different meaning to me, I determined to do well against them”.

Change for the good

The 20-year-old believes Chiefs are not currently occupying their rightful position in the league and are determined to move out of the PSL basement. Khune explained by saying, “we have fourteen matches left for this season and we want to get at least 33 points out of these games and are aiming for a top five finish, I feel that I can improve on my performance from midweek. One thing I need to do is ensure there is effective communication between myself and my backline, hopefully we will have a better time out on Sunday”.
