Kaizer Chiefs and Vodacom were shaking things up today at Durban’s South Beach. Not only was Vodacom Shake Every Day’s ‘Bra Shakes’ present, to loud cheers of the crowd, but also some first team players and former Glamour Boy, Derrick Spencer, who will be an eager spectator at Saturday’s game against Free State Stars.
“Chiefs are not doing really good, but not that bad either,” Spencer comments about Amakhosi’s sixth spot on the Absa Premiership log. “That might not be the position we want to be in, but it’s only three points behind log leaders, Baroka FC.”
Spencer played for Kaizer Chiefs between 2004 and 2008, being part of the side that won the league title in 2005. He also won numerous cups during his time at the club.
The former defender, who was equally confident playing in midfield, enjoyed the KC Roadshow at South Beach. “It was really great to interact with the fans,” he comments, before adding with a smile on his face, “it reminded me of back in the days, when I played for Chiefs.”
He also chatted with the first team players that made an appearance at the activation, including Ramahlwe Mphahlele, Sibusiso Khumalo, William Twala and Emmanuel Letlotlo.
Spencer, who was born in Eshowe, KwaZulu-Natal, still watches every game of Amakhosi, in good and less good times. “I am a die-hard Chiefs supporter,” he says. “That’s why I am going to the stadium on Saturday, to support the boys.”
He grew up being a fanatical Chiefs supporter, admiring the ball skills of Doctor Khumalo and the fierce tackling of Lucas Radebe.
About Saturday’s league clash against Free State Stars at Moses Mabhida Stadium, Spencer remarks: “I am looking forward to the match. The atmosphere in the stadium in Durban is always magnificent. I am confident that with the backing of the crowd we will win.”
