Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-1 to Bidvest Wits in an Absa Premiership clash at the FNB Stadium on Wednesday evening. The Students opened the score early on, before Siphiwe Tshabalala equalised with a magnificently taken free-kick. The visitors scored the winner in the second half.
Siphiwe Tshabalala had recovered from his injury and was back in the starting line-up for the Wits encounter. George Lebese, however, was still out injured.
The game had barely started and there was a big shock for the home crowd when Wits scored the opening goal in the fifth minute. A well-taken free-kick landed on the head of Clever Boys striker Henrico Botes, who slotted the ball past Chiefs goalkeeper Pieterse.
After this early set-back, Amakhosi took the initiative, going after the equaliser. However, it didn’t result in many chances.
The team went a bit through the motion with nobody really playing well.
Meanwhile, Wits danger man Sibusiso Vilakazi had to be replaced due to injury already in the 27th minute.
Chiefs got a free-kick in the 35th minute. Tshabalala went to stand behind the ball, full of confidence. Only a few weeks ago, he scored brilliantly from a free-kick against Tuks. His shot was spot on again, leaving the Wits goalkeeper no chance, 1-1. It was again a beauty!
The Amakhosi started the second half better, with quicker passing and better off-the-ball movement. It resulted in the home side getting various corner kicks and a few chances. Sadly, the ball didn’t end up in the net.
Even worse, it was Wits that scored their second from a counter-attack in the 58th minute, thanks to first-half substitute Patrick Sekese. The stadium went quiet.
That was also the moment for Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter to bring in some flesh blood, bringing on Mandla Masango for George Maluleka.
It was again Tshabalala who came close to equalising when his blistering shot from long range was nearly too hot for Wits keeper Moeneeb Josephs to handle.
Bernard Parker also had a fine opportunity, but the ball flew over the crossbar, missing the target. Another chance came to Masango, but the ball was just stopped on the goal line by a Wits defender.
It was obviously not the league champion’s night.
The disappointing result meant that the dream of an unbeaten home record this season, in league games, went up in flames.
Amakhosi’s last game of the season will be against Chippa United at Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday afternoon (kick-off at 15:00).
