"I'm pleased with the attitude of the players," expresses Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter following the hard fought 1-0 win over Township Rollers to advance to the next round of the 19th edition of the CAF Champions League.
Amakhosi consolidated their first leg lead thanks to Siyabonga Nkosi’s winner in the 28th minute.
"We came here with a delicate lead," Baxter says, referring to the 2-1 lead that Chiefs bagged in the first leg at home a fortnight ago. "2-1 is not a solid lead. We had to score. We came here with a balanced and well thought out game plan. Attack and not concede was part of that plan."
"In this sort of game, away from home, discipline is important. I'm glad the players did well. When the pitch is bumpy, as it was today, you have to adapt to play a simple passing game."
Coach Baxter pulled out Mandla Masango, Matthew Rusike during the game and he was forced to substitute Tsepo Masilela due to an injury.
"We sacrificed Mandla and brought in Morgan Gould to consolidate the lead,” the Amakhosi coach explains the more defensive way of play in the second half. “The aim was to allow them to come at us."
"We thought that we would catch them on the break. We nearly did that on the various occasions that we counter-attacked, but we struggled with the final pass to finish it off.”
Chiefs are now heading home to play in a back-to-back Absa Premiership matches against Ajax Cape Town (on Wednesday) and Kaizer Chiefs (on Saturday).
The opponent in the next round of the CAF Champions League is likely to be Raja Casablanca. The Moroccan side go into their second leg on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 advantage.
"We now have to recoup for the upcoming big match against Ajax Cape Town," Baxter looks ahead, before reflecting once more on the Township Rollers clash: "We came here not knowing what to expect but it turned out to be a good day's work."
On the next opponent, the Chiefs coach mentions: "If our next opponent will indeed be Raja, we will transform from the hunter to the hunted."
About match winner Nkosi, Baxter adds: "Siyabonga received important game time today, doing well. His performance has been noticed and it has made him selectable for the upcoming matches."
