Kaizer Chiefs Legend and current Assistant Coach, Doctor Khumalo displayed the glimpses of the old ‘16V’ when the Kaizer Chiefs Legends took on The Reds Legends in the Liverpool Legends Tour to SA. The game that was dubbed the ‘Showpiece’ was played at the Moses Mabhida Stadium in Durban on the 16th November 2013.
With his side trailing 4 – 5 towards the end of the match, there was still time for Doctor Khumalo to work his magic, leaving Mark Wright for dead before firing past Bruce Grobbelaar to make it 5-5. The goal was reminiscent of the past glory days. kaizerchiefs.com caught up with ‘16V’ to get the low down on that moment of brilliance;
“It is all about experience and knowing the value of the brand that you are representing. The Chiefs badge is big and it takes a certain kind of player to wear the Gold and Black jersey. You saw the kind of players that played on the day, they would play until the last whistle just to protect the brand,” commented ‘16V’.
“Football is a team sport, but the individual brilliance makes a difference in a Team. We didn’t want to disappoint the supporters. When the chips are down you need someone to step up and take the responsibility to carry the Team and that’s what I did on that day. I am fit because on Mondays we play a 6 aside games with Brian Baloyi (Chiefs Legend). I also chase the ball around with the guys (Kaizer Chiefs First Team) at training. I also do gym work at Virgin Active with the Team and inspired by Coach Baxter. Baxter trains every day that is why he is in good shape;” said Khumalo, the once feared tricky midfielder.
“It is difficult to say if there will be another Doctor Khumalo in future. We are different people with different talents. You have to be disciplined as an individual. I always advise the young stars to have goals and respect for others and their careers. If you are disciplined you can deal with the challenges that come your way. As for scoring goals like I used to do and still do now, one must have 110% composure;” said Doctor Khumalo, still holding the Kaizer Chiefs record for most starts with 397 starts to his name.
