“At Chiefs a draw is a loss,” Steve Komphela reacted after Saturday night’s one-all draw against Bidvest Wits. “We had chances to win the match.”
The Kaizer Chiefs coach watched his side take the lead thanks to Ryan Moon’s headed goal, before Lehlohonolo Majoro equalised for the home side.
“We defended well until we conceded from a cross,” Komphela rued. “If you fail to defend your box, you pay a price - Majoro punished us, heading the ball in. We should have won this match, but will continue fighting. We just have to keep going.”
“Ryan is a born striker,” the Amakhosi coach commented about Moon’s third goal in four games. “You see him when it matters most, that’s what strikers are made off. I’m happy with his performances.”
He also spoke about striker Gustavo Páez, who isn’t playing at his best at present. “We need to support Páez to regain his confidence. We know what he’s capable of and I am confident that he will return to form soon.”
Siphelele Ntshangase did well after coming on as a substitute, even getting a few opportunities to finish the game off. “I thought Siphelele should have buried the one-on-one chance he got,” lamented Komphela. “That should have been the winner.”
When asked why Leonardo Castro and Ntshangase, who were both signed during the January transfer window, didn’t start, the coach commented, “It's a selection process. We started with Moon and he scored. It’s the same with Siphelele. Do you start with him and leave Siphiwe Tshabalala on the bench? He provided the assist for Moon’s goal. It’s all a matter of selection.”
The Glamour Boys lost two costly points as a result of the draw and are now seven points behind Absa Premiership log leaders Mamelodi Sundowns.
The Chiefs coach, however, pointed out that there are still ten league fixtures to go: “It is far from finished. It’s still a long way to go until the end of the season. We wanted to win this match, but it wasn’t to be.”
