“It was great to get game time,” reflects Bhongolethu ‘Bhongo’ Jayiya on his Kaizer Chiefs debut against Botswana’s Township Rollers at the Maize Cup last weekend. “Especially also after the good pre-season camp we had in Potchefstroom.”
Jayiya recently joined Chiefs from Cape Town City. The 27-year-old explains that wearing the Gold and Black jersey for the first time was a “dream come true”.
The midfielder is a fervent Amakhosi supporter since the age of five. Jayiya still loves that brilliant Chiefs squad of the early 2000s with players like Brian Baloyi, Jabu Pule (Mahlangu), Cyril Nzama, Patrick Mabedi and so on.
Out of all these big stars, however, Stanton ‘Stiga’ Fredericks is his big favourite. “Stanton stood out in the way he played,” Jayiya explains, “but also in the way he presented himself off the field. He was never in the news for the wrong reasons and you would never hear a negative story about Stanton. He was a true professional.”
Jayiya, who was born in Dlamini, Soweto, played in his early seasons as a pro with Fredericks at Bidvest Wits, from 2010 to 2013. “I was promoted from the development side, BidBoys, to the first team, while Stanton had returned to the club for which he had originally made his debut.”
The former Glamour Boy, Fredericks, gave Jayiya some valuable tips.
‘Bhongo’ left Bidvest Wits in 2014 to join Maritzburg United. The versatile midfielder, who can play both as an offensive and defensive midfielder, also played for Mpumalanga Black Aces and Cape Town City before joining Chiefs.
“I grew up in a Kaizer Chiefs supporting family,” the new Amakhosi midfielder concludes. “My father, my mother, my grandfather, my sister… Everybody supports the Glamour Boys. That’s why it’s so great that I have now joined the club of my dreams.
“I won’t let the supporters down. I know how they feel, because I myself have always been one. I want to help Kaizer Chiefs win trophies.”
