I felt that enthusiasm - Bvuma

“I felt that enthusiasm,” Bruce Bvuma reflects on the Kaizer Chiefs supporters at the recent Carling Black Label Cup match against Orlando Pirates. “The crowd went wild every time Itumeleng Khune and Brilliant Khuzwayo made a save during the warming-up. It was wonderful.”

Bvuma kept goal for Amakhosi in two Absa Premiership matches in April, but it’s only this season that the 22-year-old joined the squad for the first time for pre-season.

He comes through Chiefs’ development ranks and did brilliantly during the club’s MDC campaign last season.

The talented goalkeeper recently made his debut for Bafana Bafana against Botswana in a Cosafa Castle Cup match.

He gives credit to the goalkeeper coaches, Alex Revoredo, Brian Baloyi and Rory Minnaar, at Naturena for helping him to be where he’s now.

Itumeleng Khune also helps a lot. “Itu has always been my favourite local goalkeeper,” Bvuma comments. “He has been at Chiefs for more than ten years now. He has played for South Africa at the World Cup and he has won numerous trophies. It’s my dream to achieve in my career what Itu has achieved.”

Bvuma’s father Samuel was a goalkeeper too. “He didn’t have the opportunity to play professionally. He was always guiding me and correcting my mistakes when growing up. By signing for Chiefs, I have fulfilled both his dream and my own.”

He was born in Leratong, Gauteng. He likes to chill in his spare time with fellow goalkeeper Luthando Sixhaso. They like to play FIFA 17 or otherwise go to Gold Reef City and have some fun.

Bvuma doesn’t watch other sports. “Only soccer,” he says, “and then I look above all at the goalkeepers. For example, how they position themselves in certain situations, how they move in one-on-one situations or when they will come for a cross or rather stay on the goalline.”

His international goalkeeping heroes are Bayern Munich’s Manuel Neuer and Barcelona’s Marc-André ter Stegen.

“To get better,” the young Glamour Boy adds, “I plan to come early to training and do something extra. I am determined to succeed.”

Bvuma wants to help Amakhosi win trophies. “This club is known for winning cups and league titles. However, we haven’t won anything over the last two seasons. I want to contribute to changing that.”
