First Chiefs visit to Phuthaditjaba in over two years
First Chiefs visit to Phuthaditjaba in over two years

Posted in News on Mar 07, 2008.

It has been a topsy-turvy time for Chiefs over the last few matches but they will be hoping that their historical dominance of Free State Stars will give them the edge over their hosts when they travel to Phuthaditjaba to take on third placed State Stars in an ABSA Premiership match on Sunday.

The Amakhosi’s last visit to the area commonly known as Qwa Qwa was during the 2005 – 2006 season, the teams played to a 1-1 draw one of only four of the fifteen games contested between the teams since 1996 that has ended in a stalemate.

Chiefs have only ever been defeated once by Stars in fifteen PSL matches and between their last two league fixtures against the Free Staters The Amakhosi have scored eight goals, including three when the teams met earlier in the season.

Given all that though Chiefs cannot expect statistics to help win them the game, and cannot be complacent as they go into a match against the surprise package of the 2007 – 2008 season. Free State Stars came back into the Premier League this season, as they were relegated at the end of the 2005 – 2006 campaign, and have been able to silence their critics with their achievements in both the league and Cup competitions.

Apart from being placed third on the league standings they also made it to the Telkom Knock Out Cup semi – finals, where eventual runners up Mamelodi Sundowns beat them. Two draws in their last two outings against bottom clubs Jomo Cosmos and Thanda Royal lost Stars some valuable points in the title race, and it will be up to Chiefs to take more points off them over the week in order to once more halt their title charge.

Earlier in the season

The Amakhosi recorded their largest margin of victory this season when they beat Free State Stars on the 31 October 3-0, at the Olympia Park Stadium in Rustenburg. Although it was not all plain sailing for Chiefs as the score line would suggest, it was a game of two halves as the visitors dominated the opening forty-five minutes.

Had it not been for Itumeleng Khune making a number of telling stops the most important being a back ward lunge to turn round a Duncan Lechesa shot from range, Chiefs could well have been trailing in the match.

After riding their luck in the first half Chiefs seized the initiative early in the second, Khune sent a long clearance end to end which bounced in front of Mabhudi Khenyeza, who was on the edge of the Stars 18 yard area he shot first time to give Chiefs the lead in the 46th minute.

Onismor Bhasera started off and finished a well worked Chiefs move scoring his first goal for The Amakhosi in the 75th minute, Shaun Bartlett scored Chiefs third heading home a Jimmy Tau cross in second half injury time to score a goal on the day he was celebrating his 35th birthday. Bartlett did have the ball in the back of the net again shortly after but it did not count as

the referee had signaled the end of the match a few seconds before the ball crossed the line.
