After extensive negotiations, Stadium Management SA (Pty) Limited (“SMSA”) and First National Bank (“FNB”) entered into a new contract as stadium naming rights holder for an additional five- year period commencing in 2017, making it the longest standing stadium naming rights sponsor in South African sport stadium history – a remarkable 30-year association with the FNB Stadium.
The 87 436-seater stadium managed by SMSA will continue being called “The FNB Stadium”.
The City of Johannesburg Metropolitan, SMSA and FNB will continue to leverage the partnership through traditional and online media channels to drive the brand engagement, with additional focus on our traditional stadium partners – the Premier Soccer League, the SA Football Association, Kaizer Chiefs Football Club, Orlando Pirates Football Club, Big Concerts International, Carling Black Label and the various religious ministries with additional focus on expanding our partnerships to include the South African Rugby Union in hosting international rugby Test matches.
With FNB being a leading and innovative commercial brand, the continuation of our association with them lends prestige, with SMSA very proud to have them as naming rights sponsor.
Jacques Grobbelaar, Chief Executive Officer of SMSA, said: “The South African football supporters are familiar with the FNB Stadium as the home of South African football. Since the 2010 Fifa World Cup tournament, this venue has hosted in excess of 630 events with more than nine million spectators going through the gates. The partnership with FNB is a like-minded partnership focusing on quality and shared values of teamwork.”
“FNB is a world leading entity and we are an internationally recognised brand after having been honoured with a Business Initiative Directions (BID) Award for Excellence in London, England, four months ago,” concluded Grobbelaar.
SAIL Chief Executive Officer, Jaco Beukes, added: “The sponsorship is exceptional on various levels. Notable is not only FNB’s tenure of 30 years as naming rights partner but also the strategic fit of the FNB Brand, its brand objectives, recent accolades and awards won with this iconic and true South African landmark.”

The next two high profile events at the venue is the Absa Premiership football clash between FNB Stadium anchor tenants, Kaizer Chiefs, and African champions Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, 1 April.
The highly-anticipated Justin Bieber Purpose World Tour will also make a stop on Sunday, 14 May, as the international pop star makes his second appearance at the venue with tickets for both of these events available through Computicket (www.computicket.com) and Shoprite/Checkers retail outlets around the country.
