The young Chiefs team turned up on Thursday at lunch time eager to take to the field for their first game against Benoni Premier Untied, but were left kicking their heels as the young rabbits failed to appear. Khuse’s team was then awarded three points and three goals for Benoni’s no show, the young rabbits were also absent from their second group D game of the day which was against International FC of Nigeria. The Nigerians were awarded the points as well, Khuse’s team did manage to get some on field action later in the day when they faced the De Beers team and cruised to a comfortable 3-0 win which left them top of their group after the first day of play.

Faba shines against De Beers

The much talked about Kaizer Chiefs youth player Stephen Faba who featured for the Kaizer Chiefs reserves during the 2007 PSL Reserve League season, a player who regularly trains with the Chiefs first team. Was on song on Thursday evening as The young Amakhosi finally got out on to the field after their first game was cancelled, it did not take them long to get on the board as Faba scored the first of his two goals in a 3-0 win after just ten minutes. The young midfielder found himself in a tight spot after being played in to the De Beers 18 yard area, with the goalkeeper charging out and two defenders bearing down on him. Faba had to think quickly and he did as he lobbed the ball over the stranded keeper to open the scoring, early in the second half he was at it again as he took on two defenders and smashed the ball past the keeper into the bottom of the net to double Chiefs lead.

Phello Mofokeng made certain of the win with a third goal late in the second half as he was on the receiving end of a move which started from the back, with a patient build up and some neat inter passing Mofokeng was at the end of a well taken team goal and had to roll the ball home.

Khuse pleased

Donald Khuse told kaizerchiefs.com afterwards that if he was told that after the first day of action his team would be top of their group with six points he would have taken it anytime, the Chiefs u-19 coach does believe that his teams sternest test will come at noon on Friday against the Nigerian outfit International FC. The Nigerians who are also undefeated after two group matches are favorites with Chiefs to proceed from group D to the knock out stages, Khuse said “the good thing about the postponement of the Benoni game was that we were able to get to have a look at the Nigerians as our game was scheduled at the same time as their match against Celtic.

They look like a very tough team who use their physical prowess to gain the upper hand over the opposition, Celtic did push them all the way and I know that although it will be a tough assignment we can defeat them”.

Khuse’s team have two more group games and have placed themselves in a position that could easily see them qualify for the next stage of the competition, they will be taking nothing for granted though and will be aiming to continue with their thus far unbeaten run in the competition against International FC on Friday and Celtic in their final group game on Saturday morning.
