Kaizer Chiefs continued to make history this week when on Monday, 29 October, together with their Sponsor and Financial Insurance Business partner, Hollard launched rugby 7s Team that is going to participate in the inaugural NBM 7’s Premier League Tournament, taking place in George on 14-15 December 2012.
The tournament will feature the South African Super Rugby franchises and six corporate teams from all over the country.
King Williams Town born, Gcobani Bobo (33) who started his career in rugby at Dale College and went on to represent Provincial sides Golden Lions, Natal Sharks, Western Province also featuring in Super Rugby for Lions and Stormers has also represented Springboks.
The highly rated winger or centre speaking to kaizerchiefs.com on Wednesday revealed that he was “honoured” to have been given a responsibility to lead Kaizer Chiefs 7s Team and to be part of the history that will ensure that both mainstream sporting codes in South Africa will be on show for the first time when a rugby team wearing the colours of Soweto giants participates in the tournament.
Kaizerchiefs.com: Bobs congratulations on your appointment as a Coach of Kaizer Chiefs 7s Team…
Gcobani Bobo: This is a major kick and a great honour to have been given a responsibility to lead such an enormous brand in Kaizer Chiefs.
I am also honoured to be part of the history that will for the first time ensure that the two mainstream sporting codes amalgamate during a very important time in our history as a country. This has brought pride, joy and jubilation to me and it is the responsibility that I do not take lightly.
What did you know about Kaizer Chiefs before being given the responsibility?
GB: I grew up during an era where Samora Khulu was mesmerising defenders at Ellis Park, Marks Maponyane and Scara Thindwa causing havoc to the opposition teams. The generation was quickly followed by the likes of Doc Khumalo and Ace Khuse.
The two (Doc & Ace) were leading figures of sports and the country and I looked up to people like them growing up in a place called Zwelitsha in the Eastern Cape. The generation after Doc was followed by the likes of Shakes Kungwane and this is a team that I grew up supporting, Kaizer Chiefs.
Apparently you played football yourself…
GB: I played for a team in Zwelitsha, The Doves and I remember going to Dale College where I played football and rugby. I started playing more rugby and the rest like the say is history (smiling).
The 14-15 December is approaching fast…
GB: We need to assemble a balanced team with a good mixture of youth and experience. It must be a team with lots of power and speed. I will be in touch with the Captain, Breyton Paulse and William Strauss to ensure that assemble a team that is going to make the supporters proud.
What is your philosophy as a Coach?
GB: You move across the field by passing the ball and running into space. Kicking the ball has to be the last thing on the player’s mind. In 7s rugby it’s more about keeping possession.
In a 15 men game players for instance a player covers seven metres where’s in the 7s rugby players covers 15 metres in between players, if then you don’t keep possession then you will be in trouble. 7s rugby is about maintaining and keeping possession.
What do you think Captain, Breyton Paulse is going to offer to the team?
GB: He has represented South Africa in the 7s team at international level and played for Springboks over 60 times. He played in the Super Rugby and I believe his experience is going to be a big factor for the team. He will also be a calming influence guiding the young and old players. He is currently an analyst but still fit and passionate about the game.
I noticed that during the interviews you had your hand below the badge most of the time…
GB: (bursts into laughter) I take pride in the responsibility that I have been given and the Club has adopted a theme; Reclaiming the Glory and I want to be part of that!
