To his relief though he came back into the Chiefs team against SuperSport over the weekend and even though it was a match in which The Amakhosi tasted defeat, given the fact that he had been out of action for so long, Quartey could be pleased with his personal performance at central defense.
The strong defender who previously played for Ashanti Goldfields was making a name for himself, with some sturdy performances for Chiefs prior to his injury in a Telkom Cup match against Swallows in September. Having made his comeback Quartey is now focused on retaining his place in the starting eleven and is looking at giving another good showing this weekend when Chiefs travel to Cape Town to take on the current PSL Leaders Ajax.
Return to sender
Getting out onto the pitch in front of the fans on Saturday evening when Chiefs hosted SuperSport brought a smile to Quartey’s face as he has had to watch all the action over the past few months from the physio’s table.
Getting back out in the middle was a delightful feeling as Quartey told kaizerchiefs.com, “It was frustrating for me having to sit out so many months, that is why when I was told by the coach that I was going to play on Saturday, I was overjoyed. It was nice being out there and receiving the applause that I got from the fans, their reception and appreciation of my efforts really made my comeback extra special”.
Mix come back
The end result of Saturday’s evenings encounter did not make good reading for Chiefs as they lost to SuperSport. Quartey spoke of his disappointment of not being able to make a winning return to action.
“I was hoping that my return would bring the team luck and that we would be able to pick up a win”. Of his own performance in the match he said “on reflection given that it was my first match after such a long time I think I did what was asked of me although I must add that I still feel that I have a lot to do to be at my best physically and technically”.
League leading
After one stern test of his resolve and readiness for action, Quartey will have another tough task on his plate when Chiefs travel to Cape Town for a meeting on Saturday with the team currently setting the PSL alight, Ajax Cape Town.
It is a game that he does not want to miss and will do his utmost to try and halt Ajax’s title surge, he went on to add “Coming back from such a long time off I obviously want to at every opportunity test myself against the best players in the league. This weekend’s game against Ajax is another opportunity for me to do so, they want the title and we want to make them work hard for a shot at the championship”.
