“We have discussed the scoring issue with the team,” admits Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela ahead of tonight’s match against Free State Stars. “We have to score first. Chiefs are not used to conceding too many goals.”

The Amakhosi mentor made this comment after having taken his charges through the final preparation for this mouth-watering Absa Premiership clash against Ea Lla Koto at FNB Stadium on Saturday evening, 22 August (kick-off at 20:15).

Amakhosi have so far recorded one point from one game in the 2015/16 league campaign, having played to a goalless draw away against Chippa United.

“The injury room is clearing up a bit,” confirms Komphela. “Morgan Gould is training with the team, albeit lightly. But Daniel Cardoso and Brilliant Khuzwayo are still nursing injuries and will return in about three weeks’ time.”

With the season at an early stage, Amakhosi are placed eighth on the Absa Premiership log.

It will be an interesting match to watch, as Komphela played for Free State Stars between 1989 and 1993, before joining Chiefs. Furthermore, the Amakhosi coach was twice in charge of Ea Lla Koto, in the 2008/9 season and from 2010 to 2013.

“They will be running hard at us,” says Komphela. “We will see how far they will be able to run at the FNB Stadium.”

Stars suffered a 1-0 loss at home to Mpumalanga Black Aces in their opening league match.

“All the teams bring their A+ game to us,” says Komphela stressing the importance of never taking any opponent lightly. “We are aware of that element and we have planned to counter that.”

In head-to-head stats, Chiefs and Stars have met in 31 league matches since 1996.

The Amakhosi have 20 wins compared to three for Ea Lla Koto, while eight matches were draws.

Remarkably, Chiefs have not tasted defeat against Stars in the league since the 2010/11 season.

Komphela revealed that newly signed striker Bongani Ndulula will be included in the squad for the first time since recovering from injury.

“We plan to win this match,” concludes Komphela. “This is our first league match at home and we need to stamp our authority at home.”
