My transfer…
(Pauses for a while) I joined Kaizer Chiefs from Tembisa Classic…but my clearance came from Orlando Pirates. I could have joined the Club as early as 1994 while I was still at Cosmos. I made this known to Jomo before I went to Brazil for a stint with Santos.
My debut…
It was against Bloemfontein Celtic at Johannesburg Stadium after I had signed for the team back in July 2000. We won the game 1-0 but we played badly. I remember even the Coach then, Muhsin Ertugral querying the goal, ‘no goal’. We laughed because we wanted three points more but he wanted us to play well and we were just not doing it on the day.
That day I played alongside the likes of Siyabonga ‘Bhele’ Nomvethe, ‘Shuffle’ Jabu Pule (Mahlangu), Cyril Nzama, Brain Baloyi, Martin Zwane, Thabo Mooki, Jacob Tshisevhe, Lifa Gqosha and Doctor Khumalo.
My first goal…
It was against Manning Rangers also at Johannesburg Stadium. It was a cross from Marco Mthembu on the left and Tony Ilodigwe was the first on the ball but decided to pass it to me for an easy tap in.
My favourite game…
There are so many games that come into my mind. It is difficult for me to single out one game. I do remember though the game against Black Leopards at Ellis Park in 2003/2004 season. We gave them a 5-0 drubbing on the night. I was on fire that evening but that game was more of a collective effort.
‘Shoes’ (John Mosheou) scored a hattrick for us. Rowan Fernandez’s distribution was superb on the night. I was involved in almost all the goals scoring another one after playing a one-two with Shoes. This is the same season I got suspended. I was unstoppable and they thought maybe if we suspend him it will work (Smiling)
Kaizerchiefs.com: Arthur Zwane was mysteriously suspended for two years a sentence that was later reduced to six months for taking Methyl testosterone. Zwane denied taking any banned substance.
Team wanted to beat most…
All the teams!
My toughest opponent…
None.
My roommate(s)…
It was Brain Baloyi when I arrived, then Thabo Mooki and after that it was Patrick Mabedi. ‘Spider’ was the craziest of them all.
Best Buddy in the team…
I was close to all the guys in the team on and off the field. We used to be very close. We would organise a braai and chill together with our families. Those who were married would bring their wives and others would bring their girlfriends. The Village was the place for us though. If we were training, we would meet early at the Village just to chill…you would not wait to see your teammates.
My nickname…
‘10111’, I still do not know where this nickname came from. It was humbling to see fans painting their faces ‘10111’. They appreciated my talent and my commitment to the team. They traveled from far and all I wanted to do was to give something back to them.
Arthur ‘10111’ Zwane announced his retirement in 2009 after playing for the Glamour Boys for almost a decade. He was part of the’ Vat Alles’ team that won five trophies in 2001 including the Mandela Cup. He was also instrumental as Chiefs won back to back league titles in 2003/2004 and 2004/2005 seasons. He is now an Assistant Coach with the first team.
