Santos can count themselves extremely unlucky in the third minute of extra time when Chiefs midfielder Arthur Zwane handled the ball on the goal line, but, to the astonishment of the home players, referee Enoch Radebe awarded Santos a corner instead of the penalty.
Earlier, Santos won the toss and decided to play with a strong North Wester, which seemed to favour the Cape side as they were more formidable in attack.
The Chiefs defence was at sixes and sevens with only Kannemeyer outstanding as he thwarted numerous attacks and also was dangerous when he pushed down the left flank.
Santos had numerous scoring opportunities in this period, notably in the fifth and 14th minutes when Musa Ongao's strikes were well saved by Chiefs goalkeeper Rowen Fernandez.
Chiefs had their moments and should have opened the scoring in the 45th minute but Sibusiso Dlamini's header went well over the bar.
In the second half, with the wind at their backs, Chiefs did all the attacking and came close in the 53rd minute when veteran John Moshoeu laid off to Dlamini but Santos goalkeeper Brenden Wardle was up to the task.
Wardle did well again in the 67th minute when he pulled off a brilliant save from a Patrick Mayo thunderbolt.
