“I arrived in camp on Sunday and immediately felt welcome,” comments Lorenzo Gordinho, who is with the Bafana Bafana squad that prepares for the upcoming friendly matches against Guinea Bissau and Angola on Saturday, 25, and Tuesday, 28 March.
“On my arrival I met players like Percy Tau from Mamelodi Sundowns and we immediately interacted,” the Kaizer Chiefs defender adds. “I feel happy to be here. It is a proud moment for me and my family.”
This is Gordinho’s first call-up for the South African national team after having made appearances in the national junior sides. “I am used to the national team set-up, having been with the Under-23s. It is just a matter of meeting new players, but there is not much difference when it comes to team dynamics.”
The 22-year-old revealed some of the interactions with the players and the coach during his first training session with the squad.
“The coach (Owen da Gama) told me he is happy to have me in the team,” Gordinho says. “He gave me a warm welcome and I was delighted to hear that he had been monitoring my performances. He is proud to see me doing well at Chiefs.”
The Glamour Boy has this season been in scintillating form in the Kaizer Chiefs colours. He has scored already four goals and was chosen as the Absa Player of the Month for September/October 2016.
“We are now focusing on training and gelling as a team,” concludes Gordinho. “I am sure that from tonight (Thursday) we will start planning for our match against Guinea Bissau.”
