Kaizer Chiefs beat SuperSport United 4-1 in an Absa Premiership match at Polokwane’s Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday evening.

The home side got ahead in the first half, before Amakhosi netted four times in the second half, thanks to a brace from George Lebese and goals from Ivan Bukenya and Siphiwe Tshabalala, to book the three points.

The first half was not an easy affair for the visitors, as SuperSport United were the more dangerous side despite not having most of the ball possession.

Amakhosi started with two changes to their more regular line-up with Keegan Ritchie and Lorenzo Gordinho coming on for the injured Erick Mathoho and Tsepo Masilela.

Matsatsantsa attacked with intent, getting a few chances to score and it was in the 22nd minute that they found the back of the net thanks to an excellence long range shot from Dove Wome, leaving Itumeleng Khune no chance.

The home side got two more excellent opportunities to score from set-pieces. However, both times the linesman decided that a SuperSport player was offside, correctly so.

Towards the end of the first half, Chiefs started to play a bit better and getting closer to the Matsatsantsa goalkeeper.

The second half started off where the first half finished, with the Amakhosi side being the better team. This time it also resulted in a goal, thanks to Lebese, who has been in excellent goal scoring form so far this season.

Lebese’s finish came in the 49th minute, basically from an excellent long range goal kick from Khune. The winger excellently finished with just the SuperSport goalkeeper to beat.

The finish gave Amakhosi confidence to go for the second, which they got nine minutes after the first when Bukenya finished well with a header from close range in the 58th minute.

Chiefs definitely came out of the dressing room in the second half a different team from the first 45 minutes, playing the ball around at a higher pace and playing forward with more intent.

The home side tried to come back, but Amakhosi defended well with Gordinho and Siyanda Xulu performing well in the centre of defence.

The trouble became even bigger for the home side when their midfielder Dean Furman was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. To be fair to the SuperSport midfielder, both yellow cards he received from referee Phillip Tinyani were a tat on the harsh side.

Thereafter, it was 11 against 10, which helped the visitors, who were enthusiastically cheered on by the majority of the supporters in attendance at the Peter Mokaba Stadium.

Amakhosi coach Steve Komphela gave a debut, wearing the Gold and Black jersey in an official game, to Camaldine Abraw in the 80th minute. The Togolese striker was instrumental in Chiefs’ third goal, providing the assist for Lebese to score his second and the visitor’s third.

Thereafter, Abraw created a penalty for Amakhosi when he was brought down in injury time by a SuperSport player. Tshabalala easily finished from the spot, 4-1.

It was a well-deserved win for Chiefs thanks to a great performance in the second half, with Lebese being selected as the Man of the Match.

Amakhosi’s next game is the MTN8 final against Ajax Cape Town at Port Elizabeth’s Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium on Saturday, 19 September (kick-off is at 15:00).
