Coach Gavin Hunt completed his first pre-match training session since joining Amakhosi in September. The session was in preparation for his first official match of the season against Maritzburg United in the MTN8.
“We are happy to start the new season,” commented Hunt after taking his troops through the captain’s run on Saturday afternoon. “The only way to gauge your preparedness for the new season is by playing one or two matches. Remember we are starting unusually because we effectively had only one and half week to prepare the team. But with the little time we had, we have prepared well for this afternoon.”
Hunt pointed at the FIFA break that came into play between the pre-season preparations. Kaizer Chiefs had a number of players called up to various national teams for international football.
“We expect the same Maritzburg United we know from last season because the only time you expect a changed side is when there is a change of the coach,” said Hunt. “We played a number of practice matches and that has given me an opportunity to see some of the players I was not even aware of. Let us see after kick-off how it goes. I think we will experience the same scenario that we saw in the matches that played under the Biological Safe Environment at the end of last season. Teams will start slow and the tempo will increase gradually with more games.”
The match will be broadcast live on the PSL channel 202 of DStv and SABC1. Follow commentary via @KaizerChiefs on twitter.
Kickoff is at 15:00 at FNB Stadium.
