“I am really happy to be back home,” Brian Baloyi comments after having been confirmed as the assistant goalkeeper coach at Kaizer Chiefs. “This is the place where it all started for me and where my career as a professional player took off.”

Baloyi is going to work with first team goalkeeper coach Rainer Dinkelacker for the next six months, being groomed to take over when the German returns to Europa, possibly at the end of this year. Baloyi is also going to work with the youth development, together with another goalkeeper coach, Rory Minnaar.

“We welcome Brian back with us,” reflects Chiefs Chairman Kaizer Motaung on the deal. “He comes highly recommended by Rainer, who has done a tremendous job for us when it comes to the goalkeeper department. Rainer is on his way out and we are looking at a succession plan.”

“Brian has the potential to become one of the best goalkeeper coaches in South Africa,” adds Motaung. “I hope he will embrace this opportunity to work under the guidance of Rainer and give back to the Club as well as our supporters.”

“I have worked with Rainer as a goalkeeper,” comments Baloyi, who joined Chiefs’ senior team in 1991, before moving to Mamelodi Sundowns in 2004. “It will be great to work with him again, enhancing my knowledge of the trade of goalkeeper coach.”

Baloyi joined Amakhosi’s first team in 1991, as an apprentice, with Wade du Plessis and William Shongwe being the senior goalkeepers at the time.

“I learnt a lot from both,” reflects ‘Spiderman’, as he was nicknamed, “getting more game time from 1993 onwards after both Wade and William had left.”

The 41-year-old gained 24 South African national team caps, making his debut again Holland on 4 June 1997 in a 2-0 loss.

He played 347 official matches (Premier League and cup) for Kaizer Chiefs, winning numerous trophies.

“I am extremely grateful for the Club and the Chairman for giving me an opportunity to work again at the Village,” concludes Baloyi.
