The last time a Chiefs player scored a hat-trick was just over a year ago when David Radebe scored three goals against his old team Free State Stars in a league game played at the FNB Stadium on the 7th December 2005.
Motaung’s three goal haul against Maritzburg United on Sunday, which saw his goal tally for the season double, as he over took Shaun Bartlett as Chiefs top marksman with as he now sits on top of the perch with six goals for the season so far.
The young Chiefs striker has been modest in his acceptance of the praise being sung in his honour in the Monday morning newspapers, instead the Chiefs number seven has laid the Amakhosi’s emphatic 6-1 victory over Maritzburg United.
“The service I received on Sunday can only be described as quality, as a striker you could not ask for anything more. The guys fought hard and took on the opposition players and sent in quality balls to me and I had to get the ball over the line,” said Motaung.
With all three of his goals being described as poacher’s goals as he netted them from inside the opposition six yard box, Kaizer is not complaining as he explains; “to me the important thing is to find the back of the net. As long as the team wins and the fans are happy it really does not matter to me in what shape or form, me or any of the other guys find the back of the net”.
While Kaizer Junior celebrated scoring three goals against Maritzburg United on Sunday in Tshwane, Chiefs midfielder Thabo Mooki also had cause to celebrate, as he equalled Neil Tovey’s record of having featured in 364 for Chiefs.
Mooki joined Tovey in second spot on the all time list of record number of appearances for Chiefs players, when he came on as a second half substitute against Maritzburg. Mooki will now have is eye on over taking Tovey when Chiefs play Santos on Wednesday, and will have another eye on Doctor Khumalo’s record of 397 appearances in the famous Gold and Black strip of Chiefs.
Chiefs six one win over Maritzburg United was also their largest victory since Ernst Middendorp took over as Coach at the start of the 2005-2006 season, it was the second time that Chiefs had scored five goals or more in a league game with Middendorp at the helm.
Last seasons five –two hammering of Free State Stars in December 2005 was the first five goal haul for Chiefs under Ernst reign, Sunday’s victory was Chiefs largest margin of victory under Ernst Middendorp.
The six goals that Chiefs managed to put past Maritzburg United was the second most goals scored by The Amakhosi in a single league game, since the inception of the PSL back in 1996 – 1997.
With Chiefs largest goal count coming in a 7-2 win over Witbank Aces, on the 24th September 1996, Pollen Ndlanya contributed with an amazing four goals in that game played in the inaugural season of the PSL.
In addition Sunday’s win over Maritzburg United was Chiefs first victory over the Kwa – Zulu Natal team in a league game, as Chiefs drew with and lost to Maritzburg during the 2005 – 2006 season.
