Santos Vs Kaizer Chiefs

Eastern Province Rugby Stadium, Port Elizabeth

Premier Soccer League

22 April 2007

Kick Off: 15h15

Temperature: 24° C

Kaizer Chiefs and Santos will create a piece of history when they take to the field at the Eastern Province Rugby Stadium in Port Elizabeth on Sunday afternoon, apart from the fact that this is the first time that Santos have hosted Chiefs in an official match outside of Cape Town or the Western Cape for that matter. The game will enter the record books for a different reason as it is the first time since the inception of the PSL in 1996, that any PSL match will have been officiated by a female referee. While a number of women have run the lines in PSL matches as assistant referees Deidre Mitchell, who hails from the Northern Port Elizabeth suburb of Gelvindale will become the first woman in South Africa to referee and official top flight match when she kicks off the game at 15h15 on Sunday.

Chiefs will also be looking at the history books for a different reason as they wish to continue their historical dominance over Santos having lost just once to the Capetonians in 19 PSL games to date, Kosta Papic and his team will be looking to uphold that record with a win on Sunday. The Amakhosi Coach has also opted for a major restructuring of his team and has made five changes to his starting eleven from the one that lost two weeks ago at home to Black Leopards. A number of the alterations to Papic’s starting eleven have been injury related, while a few of them have come down to tactics and players current form. The coach has asked for a better showing from his team for Sunday’s game, and is confident that the players selected to do the job for Chiefs will give a better account for themselves against Santos.

Chiefs alterations for the Santos game begin at the back with Fabian McCarthy coming back into the team in the centre of defence; McCarthy takes the place of captain Cyril Nzama out of action with a hamstring problem. Siphiwe Mkhonza returns to match action after sitting on the sidelines for almost two months through injury; Mkhonza has technically taken Arthur Zwane’s place in the starting blocks. Mkhonza will slot in at the back while Derrick Spencer has been pushed up field into a midfield role, Chiefs third change has Ditheko Mototo replacing Patrick Mayo Mototo will move in on the left side of midfield and David Obua looks likely to fill the gap at left back.

In midfield Siyabonga Nkosi comes back at the expense of Scara Ngobese, Nkosi has been given the role of play maker and will play just behind the front two of Louis Agyemang and Shaun Bartlett. Agyemang’s recent performances for the Chiefs reserve team have been impressive, and as a result he has gotten the nod ahead of Rotson Kilambe who did not make the journey to Port Elizabeth.
