I am grateful every day - Nahayo

Amakhosi defender Valery Nahayo has told kaizerchiefs.com that every time he takes to the field, whether it be for a game or a training session, he is grateful that he is able to once again play football and that his performances for Chiefs this season have helped him turn the corner on his emotionally draining, lengthy, injury-enforced layoff from action for most of last season.

“I am extremely happy and grateful to the Almighty that I am able to play this season. Dealing with my injury last season was difficult. It was new territory for me as I had never been injured for that long. Being out for six months was difficult,” explained Nahayo.

The Burundian international has featured in three of Chiefs' four competitive games this season and said that thinking about what he is going to achieve for Chiefs this season helped him pull through what was a very difficult period for him.

He added: “I kept being positive and every time I took another step in my recovery I kept on thinking this is what I am going to do when I return. There were people wrote me off but my coach and teammates stuck by me and they pulled me through."

Nahayo also believes that playing in the final weeks of last season helped him work his way to match fitness and prepared him for the current season. “Those four matches I played in as the season was closing helped me to get myself back on track in the best possible way. I used those games to get my form back and basically it has been a continuation into the current season.”

Since his return, Nahayo said he has a new appetite for the game, enjoys every game and is particularly looking ahead to the prospect of facing a very tough Bloemfontein Celtic team on Saturday evening at the Rand Stadium.

“The MTN8 game against them was a difficult meeting. Playing a team just a few weeks after playing them in a Cup is difficult, because they are determined to do better than they did in the previous game. I must add that right now, the way I feel, I am ready to face up to the challenge they will bring,” said Nahayo.
