I take full responsibility – Komphela
I take full responsibility – Komphela

“We controlled 90 percent of the game,” Kaizer Chiefs coach Steve Komphela reflected after the 2-0 loss to Orlando Pirates in the Nedbank Cup Last 32 on Saturday, “but we got punished with the 10 percent. We had enough chances to win. I take full responsibility.”

Except for the first ten minutes of the match, Amakhosi dominated ball possession in the Soweto Derby, creating so many goal opportunities that Komphela admitted afterwards that he didn’t even count them anymore.

But it was Pirates that, against the run of play, scored the opener at the FNB Stadium thanks to Tendai Ndoro. Soon thereafter, the striker added a second.

“The first goal came as a result of a lack of organisation at the back,” Komphela rued, before adding that the second goal fell due to “an error”.

“We gave it away. When you don’t have the character to take the chances when they arise, you get punished.”

Then, the Chiefs coach added: “We played extremely well until we made those two errors, which resulted in the goals. We should have won the game. But there is no ‘should’ or ‘if’ in football.”

Komphela is correct - sometimes the scoreboard is not a true reflection of the game. One of these examples was yesterday’s Soweto Derby.

The 2-0 loss means that Amakhosi are out of the Nedbank Cup.

Chiefs’ next game is on the road against Platinum Stars in an Absa Premiership fixture at Rustenburg’s Royal Bafokeng Stadium on Wednesday, 9 March (kick-off is at 19:30).

Then, on Saturday, 12 March, Amakhosi host Ivory Coast’s Asec Mimosas in the first leg of the CAF Champions League first round at the FNB Stadium.
