“This is a nice to have, not a must have,” Kaizer Chiefs coach Stuart Baxter reacted after being named Absa Premiership Coach of the Season at the PSL Awards on Sunday evening.
Baxter led the Amakhosi to the second league trophy in his three seasons in charge of the Club. On top of this, Chiefs also won the 2013 Nedbank Cup and the 2014 MTN8.
Chiefs have had a great season, winning 21 league matches (a PSL record) and booking 69 points (another record) on the way to the 2014/2015 Absa Premiership title.
For Baxter, however, it’s all about the TEAM and that’s why he feels that individual trophies are “nice to have”.
“Winning the Absa Premiership was a must have,” explained the coach, “as the best team wins the league trophy”.
Baxter coached Bafana Bafana from 2004 until late 2005. However, he left after South Africa failed to qualify for the 2006 World Cup.
“There was some sort of scepticism about my tenure as the Bafana coach,” reflected the coach. “That’s also why I was so eager to take the job at Kaizer Chiefs when it was offered. I wanted to prove that people were wrong at the time.”
“We won two doubles in three seasons, so I probably got it a bit more right this time,” added Baxter with a smile on his face. “However, it also shows that Safa didn’t make such a bad decision and maybe I should have been given a bit more time to get things right.”
