Owing to the FIFA calendar, seven Kaizer Chiefs players were with their respective national teams this past weekend as the ‘Road to 2010’ reaches a boiling point.

The world’s biggest soccer showpiece will be hosted by South Africa from 11 June to 11 July 2010.

In Africa 12 group winners and 8 best runners up will advance to round three. The 20 teams will then be grouped into 5 round robin, home and away group of 4 teams.

Itumeleng Khune and the “Man of the Match” performance from winger Siphiwe Tshabalala were not enough to stop the Super Eagles as they put one over Bafana Bafana in Port Elizabeth. Bafana Bafana dominated the game in both halves but came off second best losing by 1-0. South Africa is on 3rd position with four points after five games, certainly out of the African Cup of Nations.

In Harare, midfield general Tinashe Nengomasha and evergreen leftback, Onismor Bhasera could not inspire their side as they drew 0-0 with Guinea. Zimbabwe with 6 points is now lying on 3rd position in Group 2 after five games.

In Victoria, Seychelles defender Valery Nahayo was inspirational as Burudi registered a crucial away win. Despite the win, Burundi are facing an impossible task of qualifying for the next round of qualifiers having managed 6 points out of 5 games.

His defensive partner, Jonathan Quartey was not as lucky though as Ghana suffered a major set back in their bid to qualify for the 2010 World Cup/African Cup of Nations.

The Black Stars, who were not convincing on the day lost by 1-0. Ghana who were leading the Group 5 before the game are now on 3rd position tied with Gabon on 9 points.

There were also no smiles for Jose Torrealba and his teammates who travelled to Lima to meet with Peru but they were beaten 1-0. Venezuela who has accumulated 7 points is currently lying on 8th position after seven games. Only the top four will qualify for the 2010 World Cup. The 5th placed team enters a home and away play off with 4th placed team from North, Central America and Caribbean.
