“We have completed our preparations. We are ready,” enthuses coach Steve Komphela ahead of the Soweto Derby against arch-rivals Orlando Pirates. “It is all systems go on our side. We are now itching to get onto the pitch.”

This Absa Premiership game will take place at the FNB Stadium this Saturday afternoon, 30 January (kick-off is at 15:30).

“It is a big event for the supporters,” Komphela remarked. “We will focus on the game with a firm belief of a good result. There is positive energy in the camp.”

The Amakhosi are placed fourth on the Absa Premiership log with 25 points from 15 matches.

Komphela knows that the Derby is a huge match. However, the Kaizer Chiefs coach also keeps his eyes on the bigger picture - retaining the Absa Premiership title.

“The Derby is a special occasion, but we also have to keep our eyes fixed firmly on the marathon,” Komphela says, referring to the remaining fifteen league fixtures.

The Buccaneers are back in 11th position on the Absa Premiership log with 16 points from 14 matches.

“This game is not only about the three points at stake,” comments Komphela. “There is a huge element of pride involved here.”

In head-to-head stats, Pirates and Chiefs have met in 60 league matches since 1985.

Chiefs have 24 wins compared to 13 for the Buccaneers, while 23 matches were draws. Pirates have won seven of their 31 home matches against Chiefs, suffering 11 defeats in the process.

“Bernard Parker is ruled out of the game today,” confirms Komphela. The striker is making good progress recovering from his knee injury. “The rest of the lads are available for selection,” concludes Komphela.
