Kaizer Chiefs go into the Last 16 of TKO historically as the most successful team in this competition, with 13 trophies.
This competition has been in existence since 1982 and was first known as the Datsun Challenge (1982-83). John Player Special (1984-1991), Coca-Cola (1992-1996 & 2001-2005) and Rothmans (1997-2000) - all had spells as title sponsors before Telkom came on board in 2006.
Since Telkom took over as the sponsors of this competition in 2006, the Amakhosi has won the title on three occasions.
Kaizer Chiefs got to the winners podium in the 2007 edition of the Telkom Knockout after the Amakhosi triumphed 3-2 on penalties to keep up their 100 percent record against Mamelodi Sundowns in cup finals. The game ended in a barren stalemate after extra time played.
Kaizer Chiefs once again proved why they are the Cup Kings of South African football in the 2009/10 edition of the Telkom Knockout when goals from Mandla Masango and Knowledge Musona helped the Amakhosi to a 2-1 victory over Ajax Cape Town. Masango and Musona are part of the current Chiefs squad.
In December 2010, the big derby final was hosted at FNB Stadium where Chiefs ran riot, claiming a comprehensive 3-0 victory over their archrivals Orlando Pirates, courtesy of a brace from Sthembiso Ngcobo and a fine strike from Siphiwe Tshabalala. Tshabalala is part of the current Chiefs squad as well.
The Telkom Knockout trophy stands proudly in our cabinet because the rules of the competition allows a team that has won the Cup three times to keep the trophy.
Kaizer Chiefs lost 2-3 to Bidvest Wits in the last 16 of 2012 competition Bloemfontein Celtic are the reigning Champions.
The tournament features the 16 PSL teams playing in straight knockout ties through a round of 16, quarterfinals and semifinals, before the final played at a neutral ground. Extra time and penalties are used if a match ends level after the regulation 90 minutes. The tournament usually begins in late September or October and the final is played in December.
