It wasn’t meant to be – Komphela

“We had more entries into the Cosmos box,” coach Steve Komphela reflects after the 1-0 loss to Jomo Cosmos. “They only had one shot at goal and that was it. Independent of how hard we tried, it probably wasn’t meant to be.”

Ezenkosi scored in the second half thanks to a long range scorcher from Mxolisi Macuphu about which even his coach Jomo Sono joked afterwards: “Next time he will shoot from there, Mxoliso will probably hit a helicopter.”

The Cosmos coach even added: “After the 5-0 drubbing by Orlando Pirates, we changed the team and we decided to park the bus. But, there was really only one team playing today and that was Kaizer Chiefs.”

It was a correct observation from Sono, although, of course, it doesn’t help Komphela’s feelings about the result: “I am happy about the numerous chances we created. However, we have to figure out what we are not getting right when it comes to finishing.”

The Chiefs mentor also admitted that after the three previous losses, against respectively the Buccaneers, Platinum Stars and Côte d’Ivoire’s Asec Mimosas, “there was a question of anxiety, we rushed it a bit.”

Amakhosi are still in fourth position on the Absa Premiership log, having collected 39 points from 23 games.

Next up for Chiefs is the second leg of the CAF Champions League first round against Asec Mimosas coming Saturday.

The Glamour Boys lost the first leg 1-0 at home.

“We have to go to Abidjan, get an early goal and we are equal,” Komphela looks ahead to the second leg. “We are still in a position to progress to the next round.”

The second leg of this CAF Champions League’s match is scheduled to take place on Sunday, 20 March, at Abidjan’s Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny. Kick-off is at 15:30 (17:30 South African time).
