It was on the 10th of August 1996 more than 14 years ago that Chiefs kicked off life in the Premier Soccer League when they took on Jomo Cosmos. It was a game won by Chiefs thanks to a lone goal from Thabang Lebese, who would end Chiefs inaugural season in the PSL (96-97) as the clubs top goal scorer in all competitions.
As Chiefs prepare for their trip to the outskirts of the country’s capital city to face SuperSport in what will be a 450th PSL match for both sides, as they are part of six clubs in total who play be featuring in their landmark 450th PSL game.
Amakhosi skipper Jimmy Tau has spoken of his happiness at being able to lead Chiefs onto the field in this historical outing, “It is an honour and privilege we hope to mark the day with a good victory, we know it won’t be easy but having the significance of the occasion in mind we hoping it will drive us on and lift us towards victory.”
The defender also paid tribute to the first Chiefs team who competed in the PSL during its inaugural 1996 – 1997 season, “that team were the first so they set the benchmark for, we want to follow them by being as successful, they set the standard by winning the first game and we want to mark this milestone with a win.”
While Tau is aware of the special history of this encounter he does want to also help turn around Chiefs recent results against SuperSport, “everything is there for us to go out on Sunday and put up a great performance. We have been playing well of late we might not have done well against SuperSport in the league last season, we have every reason to be optimistic about getting a positive result out of the game.”
